Prenatal and Postpartum Care Series for Mental Health Support
Bringing a new baby into the family is exciting!
You’ve done all of the prep work. You scheduled your childbirth class, had your baby shower, and decorated your nursery.
But do you have the mental health support you’ll need?
This exciting addition will change your schedule, your lifestyle, and shift your relationships to your friends, family, partner, and yourself. Even when it's joyful, it can feel overwhelming - especially when you may be feeling like the world just expects you to quickly adjust and carry on. This program is here to give you a space that's just for you, where you can pause, process, and be supported through all of it.
If you have a history of anxiety or depression, you're more likely to experience those symptoms postpartum - but they may show up in new and unexpected ways. You might feel more irritable than sad, more wired than down, or like you're constantly on edge even when everything seems 'fine' on the outside. Even without a mental health history, it’s common to feel a flood of emotions including grief, irritability, sadness, guilt, anxiety, even numbness. These feelings don’t mean anything is wrong with you—they mean you’re human, navigating one of life’s biggest transitions.
The goal of this care series is to give you tools, support, and a non judgemental space during a time when those things can be hard to come by. Some people continue with longer-term therapy afterward, and others feel ready to move forward with the tools they’ve developed independently. Either way, the key is that you won’t be navigating the new mental and emotional challenges of pregnancy and new parenthood alone.
I’ve been in therapy before, how is this different?
Therapy during the pregnancy and postpartum (perinatal) period is provided by therapists trained in understanding the biological and psychological impact during this time.
This can look like support for:
Emotional support with baby blues, anxiety, and depression (PMADS)
Maintaining significant relationships
Boundary setting with family and work
Relationship with your body
Baby care and self care balance
Traumatic birth experiences
Parenting anxieties
How is this care series structured?
We ask you to commit to a minimum of 4 prenatal sessions and 6 sessions within the first 3 months postpartum. This series is designed so that you have consistent mental health support, both as you’re preparing for birth and as you’re adjusting to life with a new baby. These early months can bring big changes - both emotionally and practically - and having steady support can make all the difference in the world.
I can’t imagine keeping a regular appointment every week with my other appointments and after I have a baby.
We recognize how limited your time may be during this period, especially as you’re adjusting to a new schedule with a baby. Keeping this in mind, we offer flexibility when it comes to scheduling so that finding time to get the support you need isn’t an added stressor. Sessions can be scheduled with just 48 hours notice and we offer both in person and virtual availability. Morning, afternoon, or evening appointments are available to fit into your busy schedule.
My partner is having a hard time adjusting to our new life. Can they join?
Absolutely - your partner is welcome to join for both one prenatal session and one postpartum session as well. We know how much this life transition affects the both of you and sometimes having a shared space to talk together can be grounding. Plus, it’s essential that your partner feel well equipped to support you as best they can during this time of change.
That said, this offering is here to make sure you have the support - emotionally, mentally, and practically - that you need as you navigate all of the changes that come with new parenthood. If you and your partner are finding that you need more space to work through things together, we’re more than happy to recommend experienced couples therapists who specialize in this phase of life as well.
Will my insurance cover this?
If you have out-of-network benefits, most likely, yes! This program consists of therapeutic sessions provided by licensed psychotherapists, which are typically covered under out-of-network mental health benefits. That said, every insurance plan is different, so it’s important to check your individual coverage. You can visit our Billing & Insurance page for more information on how it works and tips on how to check your benefits.
