Janel Coleman, LMSW
Psychotherapist
You deserve a life of abundance.
Do you struggle to exist as your authentic self in a society that feels like it isn’t meant for you? Perhaps you feel unheard, unseen, or like you must hide certain parts of yourself in order to be accepted by others.
Therapy is the bridge that connects our individual struggles with the collective care of our community. Maintaining relationships, achieving goals, and experiencing joy can often feel like an uphill battle in an oppressive world.
If marginalized by society, the weight of oppression can isolate us from ourselves and others. Yet, advocating for ourselves takes bravery and vulnerability can become a source of strength.
I am a licensed psychotherapist who provides individual counseling to people in New York City and throughout New York state. I’m dedicated to empowering you to explore your feelings, conquer anxiety and depression, navigate life transitions, and fortify your relationships.
Applying my background as a trained full-spectrum doula and comprehensive health educator, I also offer support for sexuality exploration and perinatal mental health. Using a holistic, person-centered approach, I draw upon psychodynamic therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and mindfulness techniques to support your well-being. I’m also trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to help heal trauma or other concerns.
In our sessions together, I’ll help you navigate life's challenges, develop practical skills, and embrace profound shifts in perspective.
In our work, you will be able to:
Learn how to embrace and honor your authentic self
Discover a path to healing within systems of oppression and injustice
Gain a better understanding of your emotions and heal past wounds
Explore and harness your inner resilience and power
Revitalize fulfilling and supportive connections within relationships and community
With compassion, empathy, and non-judgment, I aim to instill the belief that you can not only survive but also thrive in this world. If this resonates with you, I encourage you to book a complimentary consultation with me today. I look forward to supporting you on your journey.

The best part of the work for me is supporting a client’s journey of self-discovery. It is a beautiful experience to witness clients improve their self-advocacy skills and apply their new perspectives to life’s challenges. I find much value in knowing that our work on an individual level can have a profound impact on the community level.

If you are new to therapy, first, I want to acknowledge your bravery in considering this level of support. You can be on the fence for numerous reasons. I am here to provide a confidential and compassionate space to discuss your concerns. Since therapy is not one size fits all, we can work together to determine what approach will best support your goals. Therapy can be a great way to address a multitude of life and relationship challenges. It can empower you to make sustainable perspective and behavioral shifts. Therapy can lead you towards achieving your definition of success and feeling a sense of peace.

I am passionate about improving access to comprehensive and inclusive health education. From a young age, I have been curious about the human body and what it means to be healthy and well. Unfortunately, there is a lot of misinformation and undervaluing of this access within our education and medical systems. My dedication to and practice of health education support my ability to provide holistic mental health support for my clients. I have seen how empowered people can become when they know more about their bodies.
